Protect Your Child’s Teeth This Winter

Protect Your Child’s Teeth This Winter

Winter is here, and as the temperature drops, you may notice some unexpected changes in your child’s oral health. Just like the rest of the body, teeth can be affected by chilly weather, leading to discomfort or sensitivity. Here is what you need to know about how low temperatures impact little smiles and how you can help keep them protected all season long.

1. Cold Weather and Tooth Sensitivity

When the air turns cold, it is common for teeth to feel more sensitive. This is because the cold air can cause tiny contractions in tooth enamel, exposing the underlying dentin and triggering sensitivity. While this sensation is typically temporary, children with thinner enamel or small cavities might feel these effects more acutely. If your child experiences sudden or persistent tooth sensitivity this winter, consult their dentist. Using a kid-friendly toothpaste formulated for sensitive teeth can help relieve discomfort during the colder months.

2. Dry Mouth from Winter Air

Cold winter air tends to be much drier than in warmer seasons, and heating systems can strip even more moisture from the air. This dryness often reduces saliva production, creating an environment where bacteria can thrive. Without enough saliva to wash away bacteria, your child may be more prone to bad breath, plaque buildup, and cavities. To counteract the dry winter air, encourage your child to drink water regularly throughout the day, especially on days spent playing in the snow. Additionally, consider using a humidifier at home to maintain healthy moisture levels in the air.

3. Increased Risk of Chapped Lips

Cold winds and dry air can also lead to chapped lips, which can be especially uncomfortable for children who wear braces or other orthodontic appliances. Lips that are dry and cracked are not only painful but can also make it challenging to maintain good dental hygiene. Applying a lip balm with SPF protection before heading outside helps shield your child’s lips from the elements. Stock up on kid-friendly lip balms to ensure they are protected all season.

4. Seasonal Colds and Oral Health

On average, children catch up to eight colds a year, with winter being the peak season for illness. These seasonal colds can indirectly impact your child’s oral health. When children are sick, they may breathe more through their mouths, leading to dry mouth and an increased risk of decay. To help, ensure your child drinks plenty of fluids to stay hydrated and continues practicing good dental hygiene, even when they feel under the weather. Once they recover, consider replacing their toothbrush to minimize the spread of germs.

5. Limit Cold-Weather Treats

Winter brings an assortment of tasty treats and comfort foods, like hot chocolate, warm cookies, and sticky cinnamon rolls. Though these goodies add to the fun of the season, their high sugar content can increase the risk of cavities. Encourage healthier winter snacks, like cheese sticks or apple slices, which are kinder to teeth and help kids stay full longer. After enjoying sweets, make sure your child rinses with water to help wash away lingering sugars.

6. Protect Against Winter Sports Injuries

Each year, 5 million teeth are lost due to sport-related injuries, and many winter sports come with considerable risk. If your child plays hockey, skis, or snowboards, their teeth are particularly vulnerable if unprotected. Ensure they wear a properly fitted mouthguard to shield their smile from accidental impacts. Mouthguards absorb shocks and help prevent chipped or broken teeth during high-impact activities.
